5 great weekend break locations in NSW

1. Byron Bay

This beautiful coastal town is famous for its relaxed and easy-going vibe. The main thing you’ll want to do while here is to turn off your phone and soak in the atmosphere consisting of café’s aplenty, small local boutiques, and the sound of melodic buskers lining the streets.

In addition to enjoying the ambience that the town has to offer, there are also plenty of things to see, do and experience.

Experience what Byron Bay used to be like in the times before it became the unique and arty town, we know it as today, by exploring the Cumbebin Wetland Sanctuary with a stroll along the boardwalk. Soak up the coastal vibes with a visit to the Cape Byron lighthouse. This attraction is made super convenient by the fact you can either walk or drive up to the top.

2. Oberon

Oberon is the highest town in the Blue Mountains Region at 1,113 metres above sea level and is a perfect place to base yourself to explore all the region has to offer.

One of the most famous attractions of the area is the Jenolan Caves, one of the oldest cave formations in the world, and regarded as one of Australia’s most awe-inspiring cave systems. You can explore the caves through one of the many guided tours available, from the standard guided cave tour, to adventure caving or even an exhilarating ghost or night tour.

If it’s beautiful views you are seeking, Mount Oberon is the perfect challenge. Climbing to the top of this mountain takes roughly an hour each way, but you will be rewarded with stunning views once you reach the summit.

3. Hunter Valley

Famed as one of Australia’s major wine regions, the Hunter Valley is a perfect romantic weekend getaway destination. There are plenty of wineries and restaurants to choose from that allow you experience the fresh produce that the area has to offer, while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Or if seeing the view from above is more your thing, why not book a hot air balloon ride and soar above the rolling landscapes below while the sun rises above. However, the Hunter Valley is not only a destination for couples, it is also a fantastic place to visit with the family too, as there is more to the area than just fine food and wine.

Take a stroll through the Hunter Valley gardens, visit the wildlife at Hunter Valley Zoo, or experience the thrill of go karting within the 850 metre track at “Go Karts Go”.

This harbour city is a great spot to explore, whether you are into relaxing on beaches, swimming in rockpools, or sandboarding (yes, you read that right!), there is something for everyone here in this laid-back city.

If you’re looking for a swimming experience like none other, head to the Bogey Hole. This interestingly names spot is a rock pool that lies beneath the shade of a cliff. The waves that crash at its edges make for a spectacular picture, and an atmospheric place to swim.

You don’t need to head to the dessert to get the thrill of sand duning, as just across Newcastle harbour lies the Stockton sand dunes. Although you will need a 4WD to explore the area, if you’re not up for hiring one, there are many tours that will take the hassle away from you and let you sit back (or slide) and enjoy the experience!

5. Sydney

Sometimes we forget that even if we live within a capital city, we can still have a great experience holidaying right at the heart of it.

Book a hotel in Sydney’s CBD and experience all the city has to offer with the convenience of not having to worry about parking or paying for a taxi to and from home!

If you are a local, try visiting the city with fresh eyes, and experiencing something new. Instead of going to your usual favourite restaurant, stroll the streets as if you were a tourist and pop into any store or restaurant that takes your fancy.

If you have never visited Sydney before, some of the most popular things to see are the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour, and Luna Park.
